Third Kensington (St Andrews) Sea Scouts

Scouts - River Race

Once again 3rd Kensington took on the other sea scout groups in a kayak regatta. The regatta took place on the years Blesbokspruit just outside Heidelberg, with the finish at the Heidelberg cricket club.

As with last year, there were entries from 1st Benoni, 1st Eastleigh, Florida Lake Sea Scouts and 3rd Kensington. The first race went off just after 8 and racing continued throughout the day. The scouts race against other of their own age or older and they have the option to do up to 4 races: White Water Class, K1 Class, K2 Class (in the front) and K2 Class (in the back).

One week before the regatta, the river was in flood and we could not paddle under the bridges to the finish. But fortune favoured us as the rain stayed away the river dropped to a very competitive level. The day started well for us, with Ashleigh Petzer taking a win in the first race, followed by Keith Hamman and Mark Durrheim for a Kensington 1-2-3. There were other highlights for us, as Keith Hamman won another race and we had several second place finishes. But in the end, our 8 paddlers could not compete against the strength of Eastleigh who had an incredible 31 scouts paddling on the day.

At the end of the day, Divan Barnard (1st Easteigh) was the fastest boy and Ashleigh was the fastest girl. In the overall standings  1st Eastleigh  won every class and thus the overall trophy, followed by 3rd Kensington and then Florida Lake Sea Scouts..
