Scouts - Seamanship
Competition
The Seamanship competition is an annual event
that tests a wide variety skills. The activities are centred around the gig, an
18 foot rowing vessel that can be considered a descendent of the whaling boats
of the 19th century.
There was an impressive turnout from the Sea Scout Area, with Scouts
representing 5 troops. Due to a change of date, we had very little
practice time and a high level of apathy on the part of our juniors
meant we could only enter a senior crew.
A general lack of muscle power meant that
we were not going to do well in the races, but the main event of the day
is the actual seamanship drills. Despite the lack of practice, the crew
acquitted themselves well in this area and finished 3rd on the day.
Well done to 1st Benoni Sea Scouts who managed to win 1st place for the
Seamanship and the races and ultimately 1st place overall.
